FUN TREC WEEKEND GENERAL INFORMATION

This is intended to be a fun and enjoyable introduction to TREC and is aimed mainly at people with little or no experience of TREC (though more experienced TRECers are very welcome). There will be 2 classes. Class 1 individual, Class 2 Pairs.

You can stay overnight in the forest though you may need to provide electric fence style corralling  and forage – there are only 3 corrals, so be prepared. Alternatively there is B&B accommodation for horse and rider available locally. See our Where to Stay page or drop us a query to trailsrainbow@gmail.com.

A little bit of history behind TREC
(Technique de Randonnee Equestre de Competition)

This sport started out as a competence test for the professional guides working within the horse tourism sector in France in the 1970s. The competition very quickly appealed to the equine tourists themselves and by 1996 twelve European Championships had been held. This sport started in Britain in the mid 1990s and has steadily been developing since.

What the competition entails

The weekend will be divided into three phases:

Saturday – POR or Orienteering
The principle is to follow a set route at predetermined speeds. The score is calculated on the difference between your time between checkpoints and the optimum time. The speed will change at each checkpoint and will be between 6km & 10km/hr.
You will be required to mark your own copy of the route from a master. You will have 10 minutes to complete this. (More time will incur penalties). Map scale 1:25000.
If you don’t think your map reading skills are up to it, try and get someone who can read a map to be your partner.
Saturday evening…..free barbecue and skiffle band in the forest !

Sunday – Control of Paces
Canter as slowly as you can along a 150m x 2m corridor and walk back along the same corridor as fast as you can – Simple!

Sunday – PVT or Obstacles
For most people this is the best part. If there are any obstacles you don’t want to do – don’t do them – it will only cost you marks. The idea is to show how you and your horse work as a team in a given situation. All obstacles are situations you might meet on an everyday hack – nothing really scary or high (although Sheenagh can get inventive!

THIS WEEKEND IS A GREAT CHANCE TO MAKE NEW FRIENDS, LEARN MORE ABOUT TREC, DEVELOP THE BOND WITH YOUR HORSE BUT MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL FOR YOU AND YOUR HORSE TO HAVE FUN!
