Riding and Driving at Dyfnant and Vyrnwy
Our area is huge. Almost 20,000 acres of forest, heath and lake. Easily accessible, and yet secluded and remote enough for absolute peace and quiet. You can choose to enjoy yourself in the forest, for the most part on riding tracks or hard roads through the trees, but with the possibility round every bend that the vista will just open up and give your breathtaking views.
Or you could choose to drive the eleven miles round Lake Vyrnwy. Or maybe link up some of the green tracks over the hill tops and enjoy big skies. The choice is yours, and you can mix and match your selections to suit your own preferences.

How easy is the parking?
Couldn’t be easier. Wide hard-topped tracks, or metalled roads, lead you to big hard-standing parking areas especially suited to horse-boxes or trailers. Some have specially-built corrals, and mounting blocks. With one exception that we are currently working on, these facilities lead you directly to the riding or driving tracks, so you have no traffic to cope with (not that we have much anyway!)
What are the tracks like? Can I get lost?
We call them our “Rainbow Routes” – they are all properly way-marked and colour-coded. The forest is so big it was a necessity to get this right, and we promise we haven’t lost anyone yet! You can pick up route maps at any time from the dispensers outside our H.Q. in the Pennffordd (Penn y Ffordd) parking area, or call us and we’ll send you one.
You can plan to link routes one to another, or utilise one or more of the many short-cuts which cut out some of the longer loops.

Why Dyfnant and Vyrnwy?
These are two distinct forests, which are now linked-up. The forest of Vyrnwy which belongs to Severn Trent Water surrounds the most incredibly beautiful lake, which has a superb pumping tower that any Rapunzle would be proud to be locked up in!
The Dyfnant Forest, owned by the Forestry Commission, is still a working forest, but the Commission is rapidly changing its nature by selective felling instead of clear felling; planting deciduous trees, and naturalising large areas. Already a beautiful place to be, and over-flown by the Red Kite and many other magnificent wild birds, the forest is getting even better by the year.
Wild. Beautiful. Safe.
If you like your countryside big, beautiful and bounteous, and you want both you and your horses to be safe, then you should come and be our guest. Take a trip to Dyfnant and Vyrnwy and have some of the best riding or driving you’ll ever have.
CALL US BEFORE YOU COME.
Until the normal forestry work is all completely done ( a few years yet ), you could give us a call while you are planning your visit and we’ll tell you if any forestry areas are temporarily closed off for safety reasons. They seldom are, and not for long even then, but “better safe than sorry”.
